I/ITSEC 06 Wrap-Up

I/ITSEC 06 was a very big week for Virtual Battlespace (VBS), which has seen remarkable progress over the past 12 months and is now employed on a very large scale across the Australian Defence Force, New Zealand Defence Force, United States Marine Corps and the United States Special Forces. Here is a rundown of how and where VBS was demonstrated during the I/ITSEC 06 conference that was recently held in Orlando, Florida.

You can now download the I/ITSEC 06 VBS2 Handout that includes pricing details.

  • VBS2 Beta 1

VBS2 went Beta the week before I/ITSEC, a big milestone for the product. The entire ADF ORBAT is represented in the Beta that also includes the following exciting new functionality:

  • M1A1 complete with loader station and two mounted machine guns (one each for the commander and loader)

  • A range of realistic vehicles for convoy training

  • A more realistic LAV-25 RWS gunner station

  • An improved magnetic compass

  • A completely new fatigue model based upon aerobic and anaerobic exertion

  • Improved personal weapon simulation (weapon sway, breathing)

  • A suppression model that affects both players and AI

  • Highly improved As Samawah and Green Zone terrain areas
  • RWS Gunner Station

  • VBS2 - Lasershot Integration

VBS2 has been integrated with Lasershot weapon and convoy training technology, an innovative combination of a cutting-edge virtual environment (VBS2) with state-of-the-art weapon training systems. At I/ITSEC, VBS2 was used as part of a dismount convoy trainer (a Humvee mockup with a mounted M249) and also a Naval M240 trainer. Vehicle mounted weapons, as well as individual weapons, were used together in combined networked scenarios.

  • JCTC - USMC CAN (Combined Arms Network) - VBS1 Linkage

Thanks to LVC Game by Calytrix, VBS1 was successfully linked via HLA between the Australian version of JSAF, Steel Beasts and the USMC CAN (which included the USMC version of JSAF and a Forward Observer simulation). Ongoing exercises were conducted for the course of the conference on a virtual representation of the USMC 29 Palms training area. VBS2 is also HLA/DIS compliant and Bohemia Interactive developers are currently finalizing the VBS2 - LVC Game integration. In testing, developers have been playing VBS1 vs VBS2 multiplayer games via LVC Game!

  • New VBS movies

VBS1 and VBS2 movies were periodically exhibited at the Joint Forces Command booth as part of a demonstration of simulation capability. VBS was heavily used as part of the ADF and USMC vignettes. The VBS1 movies depicted dirty bomb and cruise missile scenarios, and the VBS2 movie depicted an Australian incident response team securing a potential hazard in Freemantle Harbour, Australia. It is interesting to note that the VBS2 movie, which will be available for download at VBS2.com shortly, was developed entirely (including creation of new models and terrain areas) in under two weeks.
